Freedom For Independence Day
Happy 6th March! Just in time for Independence Day, we received a report for our latest discharge recipient from Korle-Bu hospital. Her name is Sandra Noah, and her story again exemplifies why we do this work.
Two year old Sandra was admitted to Korle-Bu for malaria and malnutrition in early February, and received treatment for 11 days. She was discharged 2 weeks ago, but has been held at the hospital until her medical bill could be paid in full. Her parents are hardworking people. Sandra’s mother is an apprentice hairdresser, and her father is a mason by trade, but unemployed at the moment. Her mother had managed to drum up c140,000 ( $14.28) towards Sandra’s total outstanding bill of c566,000 ($57.75). She was still looking for money to pay the rest of the bill.
I am so proud to say that thanks to your generosity Sandra was able to go home on the eve of Ghana’s Independence Day to celebrate the festivities with her family and the rest of the country. On behalf of Sandra and her family, we want to thank you for your heart and commitment to give hope to these families who would otherwise be…well…literally stuck. 50 years ago, on this day, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah declared “ Ghana, my beloved country, is free forever!” This is also our cry, a declaration of freedom from all things unfair and undesired for these young ones at Korle-Bu, and other hospitals in the country who “must” detain these children for pecuniary reasons: May you be free forever!
God bless!
